Happy Father’s Day!

Celebrating Father's Day in a Retirement Community

Father’s Day is once again here, and as elderly men who live in a retirement community such as Providence House know, it’s not a holiday we spend a lot of effort on. Part of it is the timing; by the third week of June, many families have packed the kids off to summer camp, or on to a family vacation. So, by the time Dad is older, Father’s Day isn’t a big deal.

Since Dad retired, he will not need neckties anymore, and now that he is a bit older, he really should not be tending to the grill or using power tools either. So, what to do for an elderly father on Father’s Day? We at Providence House have a few ideas to make this Father’s Day extra special.

For one thing, when considering how to celebrate Father’s Day with your elderly father in a retirement community, consider the time the celebration will take. Celebrating early in the day is an innovative idea. Older folks tend to wake up earlier, and especially those who exhibit signs of sundowning will benefit from spending quality time earlier in the day. Some ideas for senior-friendly Father’s Day celebrations include:

  • Take your elderly dad for ice cream. For most elderly folks, ice cream reminds them of their youth. It’s a simple daily activity and a treat that your dad will enjoy.
  • Golf may not be the most thrilling thing to watch on TV, but traditionally the final day of the US Open golf tournament is held on Father’s Day. If your dad likes to golf, but can’t get out to play anymore himself, chances are he wants to watch that on Father’s Day. Bring some snacks and spend time together. Is Dad not into golf? Maybe watch a favorite movie instead.
  • Hey, just because a fancy brunch is more of a Mother’s Day thing does not mean your dad would not enjoy it too. Plus, it’s a lot easier to get a table someplace nice on Father’s Day.

It’s important, especially if your dad lives in a retirement community, to keep a few things in mind. Your dad might not admit it, but many elderly people need some extra help. At Providence House, we ensure all seniors are cared for by our dedicated and skilled staff, so this Father’s Day you will not need to worry about the trivial things, we have that covered.
